Charley Longfellow
1844 – 1893
Known for His 20 months in Meiji-era Japan
Son of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He traveled to Japan in 1871 and stayed 20 months, right as the Meiji Restoration was ending centuries of isolation, shipping home kimono, lacquerware, and — most strikingly — an early Ainu collection gathered in Hokkaido at a time almost no Westerners had access to that culture. Housed at the Longfellow House.
