The Midnight Ride
April 18, 1775. Joseph Warren sent Paul Revere and William Dawes to warn Patriot leaders that British troops were marching on Concord — signaled by two lanterns hung in the steeple of Old North Church, "one if by land, two if by sea." Revere was captured by a British patrol before finishing; fellow rider Samuel Prescott completed the ride. Contrary to legend, he never shouted "the British are coming."
