One of the first French Second Empire buildings in the U.S., directly inspired by the Louvre's new wing. It served as Boston's city hall for 128 years and 38 mayors until 1969; rather than demolish it, the Architectural Heritage Foundation converted it to offices and restaurant space in 1970 — an early "adaptive reuse" landmark. It's a Ruth's Chris steakhouse now, sitting on the exact site of the original Boston Latin School, which Benjamin Franklin attended and dropped out of. On the Freedom Trail.
