Lawyer and railroad man who bought George Perkins Marsh's childhood Woodstock estate in 1869 to put Marsh's conservation ideas into practice — reforesting the hills. His granddaughter Mary French married Laurance Rockefeller, carrying the estate into its third conservation-minded family. Now Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.
