Maria & Georg von Trapp

The real family behind The Sound of Music. They fled Austria in 1938 and settled in Stowe, Vermont in 1942. The real story differs from Hollywood: 10 children, not 7; Georg was not a strict disciplinarian; and they left on an ordinary train in daylight (as Italian citizens), not a dramatic mountain hike — which would have led straight into Nazi Germany.
